Professional standards of practice also outline desired and achievable level of performance that should inform nursing practice. These standards are important in nursing because they guide clinical practice and provide a tool to rate our clinical proficiency (Davis, 2014). Standards of practice are important because they define what the nursing profession expects from its members – these standards are just the minimum expected achievement based on the desired levels of excellence (American Nurses Association, n.d.). Another reason why standards are important in nursing practice is that they help in understanding and respecting the roles of nurses. As a family nurse practitioner, I use my organization’s policies and standards of practice, my state’s scope of practice, as well as the American Nurses Association standards of practice guidelines. These standards of practice can also be used to evaluate nursing care to ensure they are aligned with established organizational policies and in line with state laws. ADN are technical nurses while BSN nurses are trained to deliver high quality patient care through a comprehensive nursing curriculum that incorporates nursing theory, clinical skills, and courses in public health, leadership, and critical thinking. The standards of practice for ADNs mainly center on technical clinical tasks such as monitoring patients, administering basic procedures, and updating charts. On the other hand, BSN nurses are expected to deliver direct patient care an assume additional tasks such as leadership, administrative, and management roles. BSN nurses may also take up public health, nurse educator, and nursing research roles. BSN nurses also use data together with nurse-gathered clinical information to help in decision making (Loversidge et al., 2018). BSN nurses provide more complex nursing care including providing holistic care. For example, they consider biopsychosocial, family aspects, and socioeconomic factors while providing care and during patient education and discharge planning Health Science Science Nursing
