In fact, according to Okobi, “it has been estimated that the prevalence of obesity is approximately 6.2 times higher than in urban America” (2021). As a result of obesity, a range of health concerns may develop including heart disease, stroke, and type II diabetes (Clark, 2021). One possible answer to this problem is to put more emphasis on prevention measures. Programs that encourage healthy eating and physical activity may be effective in lowering obesity rates in rural populations. Additional research would help identify the most successful interventions that could be implemented to reduce obesity rates in rural populations and subsequently the obesity-related diseases. Research Purpose: To investigate the impacts of dietary education as an intervention to assist in the prevention and treatment of obesity in rural populations Population: Adults (age 18+) with a body mass index (BMI) equal or greater than 30 percent living in a rural population (fewer than 2500 residents) Intervention: Monitor how dietary education affects a given rural population Comparison: Obese adults receiving dietary education compared to obese adults who do not.
