An increasing incidence ofworkplace violence in the health environment has raised a great concern among workers and employers. Violence and aggression does not have to be part of the job. According to a study from CPI or Crisis Prevention Institute, a provider of workplace violence prevention training, has identified a need for crisis training for healthcare employees who work directly with patients. CPI surveyed 1000 workplace risk professionals and results showed that primary triggers of disruptive and aggressive behavior in patients include stress, fear, anxiety and a range of neurocognitive challenges, which can lead to verbal and physical abuse in any work environment. The CPI study also showed that healthcare organizations estimate violence prevention training needs will increase by at least 20% over the next 3 years in response to regulatory pressures, employee demand and increasing risk exposure. In the emergency department where I work at, we are required to takea class in prevention of workplace violence. Currently, our company uses AVADE Workplace Violence Prevention, which is OSHA and Joint Commission certified. A study was made where participants were invited to participate in 3- h courses for “simulation education on workplace violence training” and to complete the paper naires both before and immediately after all training courses were completed. Results of the study showed that simulation education can improve the concepts of workplace violence and confidence in dealing with violent events.
