As a nurse informaticist, you would take data from your facility… As a nurse informaticist, you would take data from your facility and look for any discrepancies that occur often, make recommendations to improve those errors, and try to help establish improved efficiency and quality care. A nurse informaticist contributes to patient care quality by decreasing the chances of medical errors occurring by integrating different processes using the technology we have available which limits patient risks and can improve our quality of cares provided to patients.The development of informatics has helped address the concerns about the patient safety concerns brought up in “To ERR is human” report by improving our electronic systems that keep track of patient information, ensuring that the technology we use is safe and optimized to improve patient safety. One way that I see the changes in healthcare today is how nurses are required to scan each medication, scan the patient’s wrist band, ask their name and date of birth to ensure everything matches up to the electronic health record specific to the nurses patient.Informatics has assisted in improving culture of safety in my organization by continuously providing education on new and upcoming technologies. Providing updates to our charting system to make things even more efficient, improve the patient’s quality of care, and decrease errors. One area I feel needs to be improved is with more tools to help decrease patient falls with bed and chair alarms the less they feel the need to staff with more aids and nurses.
