The goal of academic writing is to integrate research to support an original position on a
topic. To do this, authors must first identify what has already been written about the topic
and engage in a discussion of the existing research. For the final project, you will apply
the reading, research, and writing skills you learned in the course to develop a
persuasive research essay on a topic of your choice. The audience will be academics,
so the language and presentation should be formal.
PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS
Your deliverable for this project will be a research paper formatted according to APA
standards (suggested length: 8-10 pages). Your submission will include a research
prospectus, a literature review, a research paper, and a correctly formatted references page.
In the research paper, you should identify a specific research question within your field
of study, use at least five credible sources to explain the problem, and develop an
original response or solution.
Your sources for your research should:
• Demonstrate the ability to correctly locate, interpret, and integrate research to
support and/or clarify your position as it relates to your topic.
• Be directly relevant to the topic, position, and/or a counter- position that will be
presented in the essay.
• Be presented and analyzed to demonstrate a thoughtful and accurate
representation of their content.
• Facilitate engagement with the ongoing conversation that exists on the selected
topic.

Research Prospectus
Choose your field of study (accounting, education, criminal justice, etc.), and then
identify a problem within the field that can be researched and discussed. Your research
prospectus will develop a specific direction and research question that the essay will
address. To get started, be sure to do the following:

II.
Choose a topic about which some degree of research is available.
Develop a research prospectus that identifies the audience, purpose,
major research question(s), and a working thesis statement for your
project.
Develop a schedule that includes strategies that will be used to complete each
phase of the writing process.
Locate at least five reputable sources to be used as support.
Submit this with the final draft of your research paper.
Literature Review
Now that you have chosen a research question, topic, and five reputable sources to support
your thesis statement:

III.
Review the five expert sources you have chosen to use to support your thesis
statement.
Provide a summary of the sources you are going to include in your paper.
Explain how the sources align with the ideas presented in the thesis.
Explain the credibility of each source.
Provide the literature review at the end of the Research Paper, before the Citations
and References Page.
Research Paper
Use the steps in the writing process to research and develop an effective and polished
essay that includes the following components:

An introductory paragraph that engages the reader and ends with a positional
thesis statement.
Body paragraphs that develop the thesis statement through examples, research,
and analysis.
Use of borrowed, supportive ideas that are cited and support main points.
This should make up no more than 30% of the total content and is taken

from the research completed above. A minimum of five sources must be
used.
At least one source that identifies a counter-position (the essay should
include a rhetorical analysis of that source to identify the author’s audience,
purpose, and message as part of a response to the counter-argument). It
may include a longer analysis of why the source is effective or ineffective.
A concluding paragraph that restates the thesis and summarizes the main
points of the essay.
Citations and References Page

Ensure that all sources are cited within the research paper, with the appropriate
formatting for in-text citations.
A reference should be included at the end of the paper that lists of all sources
cited in the text. This should also be formatted according to APA guidelines.
The final submission should include the research prospectus, a literature review, the final draft
of the essay with the above components, and your reference page.

1. A title page is not required for project submissions. Because evaluators do not see student
names when reviewing student work, it is important that students not include any personal
identifiers in their project submissions.
2. If your project requires a video, you should post the video to a free video hosting site
like www.youtube.com, www.photobucket.com, or another free web hosting site. The
following website maintains a list of video hosting sites: http://www.videohostings.com. In
the written materials that you submit as part of the assignment, you should include the title
of the video and a link for the evaluator to use to grade your submission. Please make sure
that the privacy settings on your video are set to allow third parties to view it.
3. When you are ready, click on the Upload Files button in the Project tab of your course to
submit your assignment. Your project should be graded within 7 days. Please contact your
instructor if this is not the case.
4. Your assignment will not be returned to you, so keep a copy for your files.
