DIRECTIONS: Read the prompt below and answer the questions that follow. Read through all of the
questions first to determine what information you need and create your research strategy from there.
The purpose of this assignment is to get you familiar with primary and secondary sources of law. You are
encouraged to use both. However, you will need to determine and explain for some questions below why
you think secondary sources you used are credible. Also note that some questions require you to cite the
source you used to answer the question. The question will specify citation style. Type your answers into
the document, save it, and then upload it through the submission link on Blackboard and submit. The
document must be a PDF or Word document.
You are an employee at TerraCycle. TerraCycle wants to use recycled soda bottles in which to sell its
fertilizer product, and the CEO would like information on the bottle deposit laws for certain states in
which the product will be sold. Unfortunately, as a start-up, money is tight and the company needs to be
well-informed before consulting an attorney.
The CEO asks you to find the statutes that address bottle deposit laws for California, Michigan, and Iowa.
Once you have located them, answer the following questions:
1.
Provide the citations for the statutes for each state below. If the bottle deposit law is a
series of statutes, provide a citation to the first statute in the series. Cite the statutes in the
following format : for California, Cal. Pub. Res. Code § _____ ; for Michigan, Mich. Comp.
Laws § _____ ; for Iowa, Iowa Code § ____ .
California:
Michigan:
Iowa:
2.
What is the purpose(s) of the laws? If you used a source other than statute to assist you in
answering this question, provide a citation for the source(s) using APA format.

5.
What type of beverage container is only covered in the California law and not in the
others?
6.
What search method did you use to learn more about bottle deposit laws? For example, did
you perform a Google search first or did you perform a general search through the library
or some other method? What, if any, secondary sources did you use to help you understand
the statutes? Why did you believe those secondary sources to be credible? To help you
answer these questions, it may be best to maintain a “research trial” in which you write
down each step of your search process, even those websites or sources you accessed but
decided not to use.
7.
What database or website did you use to locate the bottle deposit statutes? Why did you
choose that particular database or website?
