WORKING BIBLIOGRAPHY
Student Name:
Purpose
You’ve selected a topic and narrowed your focus. For the next step, navigate through the
library resources, and unearth solid supporting source material. As you learned from
the Explore Research Resources activity, you’ll want to examine these sources and evaluate
them. Completing a working bibliography will allow you to reflect on how each source can help
you support your thesis and develop your essay.
Grading
The Working Bibliography Assignment is 20 points. See the rubric attached to the Working
Bibliography Dropbox folder in the course for detailed grading criteria.
Instructions
For this activity, you are going to complete five steps to build your Working Bibliography.
Complete the following five steps in order, using the spaces provided in this document. Submit
your completed Working Bibliography document to the Working Bibliography Dropbox
folder in the course.
Step One
Clarify your title and working thesis.
EXAMPLE A Character Analysis of the Film, The Godfather, Part II
TITLE
EXAMPLE The contrast between how Michael Corleone and his father, Vito Corleone, are
THESIS introduced to their lives in crime is central to the effectiveness of this class film.

Step Two
Create a Working Bibliography by listing a minimum of five possible sources you can use
within your Research Essay. At least four must be from the St. Petersburg College Libraries.
Indicate the four library sources by including (LIBRARY) at the end of the source.
All sources must be in MLA (Modern Language Association) Works Cited format (see link to
ENC 1102 Guide: Citing Sources on Working Bibliography Assignment page). In MLA
bibliographies, the first line of the citation goes to the left hand margin with the other lines
indented. Don’t worry about that part of the format here. You will need to observe that format
in your final draft.
Arrange sources alphabetically by author’s last name or whatever comes first.
EXAMPLE Corliss, Richard. “Corleone Family Values: The Godfather, Part II at 40.”

Step Three
For each entry, include a brief summary. This should cover the source’s focus, premise, and
some of its relevant content. You may, for example, include a unique quote or an example
from the source you have found and plan to use.
EXAMPLE This article looks at the common themes and voice in the poetry of Whitman
and songs by Springsteen. Both write about the working class. Whitman tends
to romanticize labor and laborers, while Springsteen tends to look at the
disparity between hard work and where it gets people (not as far as they’d like).
The article quotes passages from both writers’ works.
