Group Project 3
Due: Dec. 9, 2016
One of the three topics covered in this course is Data Breaches. This group project will
cover major data breaches. Your team will work on the project of how Data Breaches occur, how
many records are stolen or lost, how it is detected, what mandatory requirements are there to deal
with a breach and what are the major data breaches from 2011 to now. You will be able to find
plenty of information on this from the internet. Provide a tabular summary of these data
breaches, number of records involved, when they occurred, what types of information were
compromised, how long did the hacker stay in the system, and how was the breach detected. An
interim report (5 points) is due on 10/28/2016. In the interim report you should highlight all the
resources that you have acquired, how you have divided the work among the team members and
the tentative outline planned for the report. Identify your sources in the interim report. The
interim report will be approximately 4 pages long. You should submit this report via Blackboard.
The final report and the presentation are due on 12/9/2016. On the presentation part every team
member must present some part of it. Each presenter should be dressed professionally, speak
clearly without reading from the notes, and speak to the audience.
In this group project answer the following questions in detail (5 pts for each question):
1. Briefly describe the current status of Data Breach. Explain how the perpetrators are
able to take advantage of technology and other means to hack.
2. Who are the major hackers involved in data breaches?
3. How is Data Breach affecting people’s privacy? Explain.
4. What is the projected defense to protect stored data?
For writing this report you should check both print and online resources. You may use
any information from newspapers, only to the extent that you can corroborate them from other
reliable sources. Your report should have an abstract, section headings and conclusion. Follow
the guidelines in the syllabus for preparing the report. The report should be submitted in hard
copy form immediately after the presentation. Include 5 to 10 references and list the reference
details such as author(s), volume, page numbers, year of publication or web link, as the case may
be. Any item quoted should be brief.
Hint: Abstract should be brief and to the point. It should highlight what is in the paper. See the
textbook for samples for Abstracts. It should not be confused with an introduction. Your report
need not have keywords, which are used for indexing purpose.
Guidelines on References:
1. The idea of references is that the reader should be able to locate the reference item using
the information provided in the paper. So, the reference citation should be complete. You
can see the references cited in the book for format.
