Community Rosedale, Mississippi
1.
Territorial boundaries
Rosedale, Mississippi is located 19 miles northwest of Cleveland, Mississippi. According to the United
States Census Bureau, Rosedale has a total area of 5.5 square miles, of which 5.4 square miles is land
and 0.08 square miles, or 1.14% is water. Rosedale is situated on the eastern side of the Mississippi
River, approximately midway between the mouths of the Arkansas and White rivers, which flow into the
Mississippi from Arkansas (western) side.
2.
Groupings of neighborhoods
The West side of town also known as “Backstreet” are considered the poorer side of town. . In this
particular neighborhood all of the houses need major cosmetic work and the yards are unkempt with a
lot of junk around them. The East side labeled as the “projects” consists of low income apartment
buildings/ homes. The North side of town known as “white part of town” is where the well maintained
detached single family dwellings are located. They have small yards that are well cared for and
landscaped.
3.
Type(s) of dwellings within each of those neighborhoods
The West side homes have wood siding with rusty tin roofs that need major cosmetic work. They have
air condition units in the windows .The East side of town dwellings are brick. The North side of town
dwellings primary construction materials is brick and board.
4.
Description of population you observed
I observed mostly African Americans in this community. The largest Rosedale racial/ethnic groups are
Black (82.02%) followed by White (16.86%) and Hispanic (0.75%). Most people observed on the streets
are walkers making their way to a destination. It was not uncommon to observe severely obese
individuals as well as one homeless man lying on a bench in front of the courthouse. Children are seen
walking to/from school. The city police direct traffic every morning from 7:15A.M. to 8:00 A.M. The
only stray animals are the occasional cat. Most dogs are either leashed or escorted by owners. A few
people do not feel leashes are necessary.
5.
Sanitation and cleanliness of areas
I observed a lot of areas on the East side of town with improper garbage disposal. I noted a couch, TV,
and trash lying outside of an apartment complex. This can lead to rodent and spread of bacteria. I
observed some abandoned and dilapidated buildings on Main Street which may raise lead paint
concerns. Run down houses were observed which can pose a potential health risk. All homes are
modernized with plumbing and receive water from the city.
6.
Safety factors
The town has local law enforcement for keeping the streets and neighborhoods safe. Streetlamps
observed throughout the town. Two trash cans noted one beside the court house and the other one beside
Double Quick. There is school crossing signs located near all three schools. There are several vacant
storefronts/ abandoned buildings/ closed stores on Main Street. There are limited sidewalks and cracks
in all of them which is a hazard to pedestrians.

7.
Schools/Churches
There is West bolivar Elementary School that has grades: KG-4 | 300 students that ranked 334th of
elementary schools in Mississippi. West Bolivar Middle School is |grades: 5-8 | 223 students that
ranked 240th of middle schools in Mississippi. There is West Bolivar High School that has grades: 912 | 240 students that ranked 207th of high schools in Mississippi. I observed two churches in town
named Changing World of Ministries and Riverside Baptist Church. Baptists are the religious
preference. Schools/ churches are busy and are a vital part of the community.
8.
Healthcare facilities/ Support agencies
The Post office and court house is within walking distance. There is only one accessible clinic with one
physician that is within walking distance. The nearest hospital is 20 miles away. There is one park that is
well used and maintained. I noticed one bank named The Jefferson Bank. I noticed one grocery store
named Piggly Wiggly. The town has a Dollar General and several gas stations.
9.
Unhealthy lifestyle indicators
The most obvious chronic disease conditions are obesity and tobacco use. I saw many people purchasing
unhealthy food/ snacks at Double Quick. I observed fried chicken, fried livers, fried gizzards, and french
fries being the most popular choice in selection. I noticed a junk joint promoting unhealthy
entertainment for young and old.
10.
Healthy lifestyle indicators
I observed many walkers and cyclists on the streets. Children were playing at the park on the slides and
swings.
11.
Rating of health appearance of community area. Use of scale of 1-10 with 1 being the
“unhealthiest” and 10 being the “healthiest.” What made you chose this rating?
I rate this community a six due to abandoned and dilapidated buildings as well as the run down houses.
The garbage observed due to the inadequate trash containers/ receptacles.
12.
Write a community level nursing diagnosis for your “windshield” area (this does not have to be
the one you use for your completed project)
Risk of activity intolerance among the people of Rosedale related to lack of community- based leisure
and physical activity opportunities.
13.
What positive action would you suggest to improve the health of the area assessed?
I would offer more activities for older and young adults to promote a healthier and safer lifestyle like
arcades, intramural sports, and community centers. I would install more sidewalks and renovate or tear
down the abandoned buildings. Provide city wide trash receptacles.
