In endocytosis a cell “engulfs” substances next to its surface. An indentation forms on the plasma membrane, and the substances are trapped in this indentation and pinches off to form a vesicle. The vesicle transports the substances into the cell. Exocytosis is the opposite. A vesicle full of substances moves to the cell surface and the membrane of the vesicle fuses with the cell membrane. The contents of the vesicle are then released to the outside of the cell. This also uses energy.
