BUSINESS CASE PROJECT

Introduction
The case study is in the automobile industry where I am an economist who assesses the market
trends and purchasing power in different country economies with the aim of identifying key
markets to explore and sell automobiles and spare parts. The case study seeks to address the
problem of low profitability which arises as a result of low level of technology.
Executive summary
The aim of this case study is to develop a concept of data migration using a designed system that
will be applied in storing, updating and formatting data on computers. The goal is to make
communication and interaction between automobile manufacturers and consumers convenient,
cost-effective and faster on a real-time basis to help manufacturers widen their markets by
accessing consumers from all corners of the world. The concept is meant to cut down costs by
reducing the number of agents and other intermediaries in a single transaction paving the way for
increased profits. IBM is a technology firm that will develop a real-time application that
manufacturers will use to reach consumers without spending much on resources.
Problem statement (Issue)
The problem is that manufacturers spend much time to sell their cars because they have to
involve agents and other parties in their businesses which increase their expenditure column and
the ultimate challenge is that they don’t fully maximize profits as they would (Yang, 1995).
Analysis of the situation
A single transaction takes much time to be complete and therefore time as a resource is
underutilized. The communication process is not very clear because of the many parties involved

in a transaction in a way that by the time a message is transferred from a consumer to a
manufacturer it has already been distorted. This distortion impacts on both manufacturers and
clients negatively such that clients do not get the exact features they needed in the products they
purchase while the manufacturers lose their reputation in the market.
Solution
The remedy to the current situation is coming up with a data migration system to achieve realtime interaction between the two major parties in a transaction where customers, upon
understanding the features of the products of their choice, can place an order which will be
received by the manufacturer immediately. The customer can make a payment by use of credit
card, and shipping of the product commences to the country where the customer resides or can
easily collect it.
Project Description
Manufacturers will contract with IBM, a software developer, and information technology
infrastructure provider to design an app that will be referred to as REALTECH. The app will
provide a platform for willing sellers and buyers to transact without necessarily involving agents
in placing an order and receiving the product. The app will be internet supported, and
communication will be done throughout the day including weekends where the manufacturers’
employees can work from their places of residence. REALTECH will contain icons that will
enable order placement, order receipt, payment, shipping, product delivery, collection, customer
feedback and any other kind of communication that may accompany the sale of automobiles.
Anybody will be able to download and use the app in all areas of the world that manufacturers
can deliver their products and accessories. This app is convenient because customers are not

limited on the time to place an order neither do they need to depend on intermediaries.
Manufacturers will have designated collection points in countries where they supply their
products so that customers only come to collect their products. It will be the responsibility of the
manufacturer to transport the product upon the customer placing an order and making a payment.
The products will be transported as a batch to their destination to avoid underutilization of
resources.

Budget and Project Timeline
IBM will take at most five months to come up with REALTECH app. This time is enough to
ensure that research is done on customer needs, findings are analyzed, and a prototype is
developed and tested before it is launched in the industry. IBM will incur costs at every stage of
the system development life cycle that is planning, analysis, design, implementation, testing, and
maintenance.

Recommendations
IBM should be invited on a regular basis to update the app to match new market demands.
IBM should provide a channel through which consumers can evaluate and rate REALTECH app.
Manufacturers should continuously advertise the app until it penetrates the market.
